We’re a week away from election day in the United States. As usual, things have been a little contentious between the different parties throughout this season. But why is it that Christians are so widely divided in election issues as well? Why doesn’t our identity in Christ offer us a stronger unity than our political affiliations? The Beyond Sunday Team is looking at a recent study that identified the top issues of concern for voters based on their religious affiliation and their racial background. We don’t have all the answers, but hopefully we’ll be able to think through a reasonable path to bring your faith to the polling place with you this year.

October brings with it the next instalment in the Books of the Bible series: Deuteronomy. As we wrap up the Torah we’re also pausing the narrative for Moses, who has been the central character since the book of Exodus, to give a speech to the nation of Israel. They are about to enter the promised land and Moses has some warnings, some encouragement, and some pretty blunt rhetoric.

In recent years there has been a rise in what has been termed “Christian Nationalism.” On the surface, this is portrayed as patriotism and even faithfulness to God. But if you scratch the surface even slightly there appears to be a lot about this stance that is averse to the teachings of Jesus. In every movement there is a branch that takes basic tenants and teachings and draws a hard line in the sand. If you cross that line your out the door. On the other side? Sometimes it feels like anything goes. In the world of Christianity we call this “Fundamentalism.” It can seem weird. It can be difficult. And for those on the inside it can be downright dangerous. The Beyond Sunday team is taking on this branch of our faith with stories from the news and from the team’s personal experience.

In both scenarios you are dealing with an experience called cognitive dissonance. Our brains are processing through situations like these almost constantly and it can be exhausting, challenging, and even world shattering. But refusing to engage in this process is equally dangerous for our engagement with the world.

Welcome to August and the next installment in Beyond Sunday’s ongoing Books of the Bible Series. We’re taking a break from the narrative plot and getting some instruction from the book of Leviticus. The Israelites are living as free people and traveling through the wilderness to the land God promised to Abraham. But in Leviticus we step out of that motion to get some instructions from God on how these people are called to live now that they are freed to be God’s chosen people. You may have skipped over Leviticus in the past but we think you’ll want to take another look after this week’s conversation.

With the Corona Virus still surging across the United States families across the country are looking to the school year and wondering what is coming next. Beyond Sunday doesn’t have the right answer to what the school year should look like. But as people of faith, we want to strive for a healthier level of discourse. Last week the Beyond Sunday team explored the book of Exodus and it’s themes centering around God leading the Israelites into freedom. In a twist of the schedule Pastor David is recording alone this week. So we’re circling back to Exodus and exploring the theme of freedom as laid out by scripture in contrast to an understanding of freedom being perpetuated in the world today. It’s a new month and that means it’s time for the second installment of the Beyond Sunday Books of the Bible Series. In this episode the team takes on Exodus. The biblical story picks back up with an entire nation enslaved in Egypt and as readers we get to come along as we witness God’s power to rescue them out of slavery and lead them into a new life of freedom.

This week, we’re taking on some common responses that come out against movements for racial justice. We don’t have all the answers, but we hope that this can help continue the discussion for all of us about how God calls us to work for justice in this world.

Everywhere you look our country is being confronted with the realities of systemic injustice. These are the places and systems that exist and that operate beneath our collective conscious but which, intentionally or unintentionally, benefit some over others.

In the wake of recent racial unrest and continued protests across the country, the Beyond Sunday team wants to ask an important question: What does the Bible have to say about systemic injustice? The Bible doesn’t have stories of police being arrested for murder or even of people being blatantly oppressed because of their race. But it turns out the Bible has plenty to say about God’s view of the systems that should rule our lives and how they should be carried out in the world.
