Episode 90 - Mental Health In a Pandemic World (with special guest Kat Nazaroff)

We’ve been in “quarantine” or “stay at home” or “pandemic life” for the last several months now and the world is looking different every day. Each of us are handling the changing environment in our own ways but one thing is certain: if we don’t take care of ourselves we can’t take care of others.

Pastor David is off this week so we brought Kat Nazaroff, mental health professional and friend (spouse) of the podcast, to talk about good mental health in a pandemic world.

Episode 89 - Racism and Faith Revisited (with special guest Scott Mack)

Just a few weeks ago the Beyond Sunday team shared reflections around the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. That episode covered some of the team’s thoughts on racism and faith. In the week’s since, the world has shifted again. The murder of George Floyd by a police officer has spurred protests in cities and towns through the United States calling for racial justice and changes to policies that have harmed minorities for centuries in this country.

This week, Patrick and Pastor David don’t want to be the primary voices of this conversation and so they are joined by special guest Scott Mack. Scott is a member of Lord of Life and friend of the podcast. Scott shares his experience of growing up black in the United States, raising black kids, and how this cultural moment feels both hopeful and all too familiar from past events.

We hope this episode helps you enter into difficult conversations around race and racism in your own circle of friends. As Scott will share with us in our conversation, “Sometimes it is good to feel uncomfortable.”

Episode 86 - Beyond Sunday Quarantine Edition: Racism and Faith

Sorry for the technical difficulties that led to a delayed release of this week’s episode. We hope you enjoy!

We’re in strange times and Beyond Sunday is here to walk with you every step of the way.

The Beyond Sunday team has been watching a variety of cultural events where it seems like our faith, our race, and our personal beliefs are all coming into conflict with one another. This week we look at the case of Ahmaud Arbery as Patrick and Pastor David try to understand how blatant racism has taken such a foothold in our country and our churches and what we can do to live into a Kingdom of God vision for the world.

Episode 85 - Beyond Sunday Quarantine Edition: No Pain No Gain

We’re in strange times and Beyond Sunday is here to walk with you every step of the way.

If you are anything like most of us you probably spend a fair amount of time trying to avoid pain. After all, pain doesn’t feel good. Maybe its a painful memory, relationship, experience or even a physical pain in our body. We don’t like pain and we’ve crafted a faith that by in large allows us to avoid it.

But what if pain is actually necessary to our faith life? What if pain allows us to learn, grow, and change? What if pain acts as a warning of danger that might be ahead if we ignore the pain?

We’ll look at these questions and more during this week’s episode of Beyond Sunday. We hope you’ll enjoy and be sure to send in your thoughts to beyondsundaypodcast@gmail.com.

You are probably finding yourself dealing with a variety of new and unforeseen challenges. Maybe you have an abundance of free time? Maybe you feel busier than ever and can’t remember what “free-time” looks like? We’ve heard from many people in our circle that they want to use this time to dig into their faith and read the Bible in a new way, but they keep running into a problem: Where do I start? What do I do when I don’t understand what I’m reading? Am I supposed to read this like a novel? A history text book? Something else? Pastor David is leading a new class and has some resources to share that we hope will encourage you to start (or restart) your own biblical journey.

Episode 83 - Beyond Sunday Quarantine Edition: Hulk Theology

We’re in strange times and Beyond Sunday is here to walk with you every step of the way.

Since we began this podcast, our Beyond Sunday team has been striving to bring you in depth and thoughtful analysis by pulling from articles and interviews with the brightest minds of our generation that are asking deep questions of faith and culture. In this episode, we continue in this vein and engage with the theology of someone who, once upon a time, needed no introduction: retired WWE star Hulk Hogan. Sure, his career as a wrestler is long over and he has little to no formal education in matters of theology or public policy (that we are aware of). But he too has joined the throngs of celebrities offering their 2 cents on how we as individuals and as a country should be responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Patrick and Pastor David will be jumping in the ring in a tag team match of theological positions. While Sir Hogan’s positions may gain early crowd favor they will reveal themselves as the heal they are and Beyond Sunday will be ready to pile drive them into oblivion. (Disclaimer: Pastor David is using wrestling terms and has no idea what he is talking about.)

Episode 82 - Beyond Sunday Quarantine Edition: Worship in Quarantine

We’re in strange times and Beyond Sunday is here to walk with you every step of the way.

Is it just us or does it seem like a lot of people are making poor decisions in response to the current crisis and claiming “Christianity” as their motivation? And when we look at history, why does it seem like this is a pattern? Patrick and Pastor David try to shed a little light on perspectives that don’t always seem to make sense and often leave other Christians with a bad taste in their mouth. At Beyond Sunday we hope you are staying safe and finding ways to love your neighbor regardless of where you are and what regulations you are under.

This week we’re thinking about a the pantry essentials of our faith! What do we need to keep well stocked (especially during a crisis) in our to keep our faith supported? It might be tempting to fill up on spiritual junk but there are some staples that we think will be more sustaining for you and your families. Patrick and Pastor David are digging through the pantry, throwing out the moldy onions, and making sure that we are stocked up on the nutritious and versatile food we need. Everywhere we turn we are hearing more and more about Covid-19 ( the Corona Virus). But what is a Christian suppose to do in the face of danger and illness? We’re coming back to finish our conversation about sabbath! What does God mean when we are commanded to “keep the sabbath holy?” Are we just supposed to sit and stare at a wall? Episode 74 - Faith and Reparations

Recently the Texas Diocese of the Episcopal Church has authorized money to be paid as reparations for the church’s historical role in slavery in the United States. This week on Beyond Sunday we’re asking how the modern church should respond to historical sins and what impact that should have on our individual and corporate faith. We know that this is a difficult topic for many and feel as though we are intentionally creating division. The hope of the Beyond Sunday team is that we can use this conversation as a launching point to talk about important issues of our time regardless of what we might believe. Episode 73 - The National Prayer Breakfast

Recently, religious and political leaders gathered in Washington D.C. for the National Prayer Breakfast. At this event there were two very different perspectives presented on how we treat those who we consider (or who openly claim to be) our enemies. This week the Beyond Sunday Team is joining the fray to ask the question as old as humanity itself, “How do we treat people who wish to do us harm?” We hope you’ll join the conversation on our Facebook page and let us know what it means for you to “love you enemies.”

Episode 72 - Is Religion a Mental Health Disorder?

We’re taking some time to talk about a country that is not actually covered in ice: Iceland! Recently, the Icelandic government came out with a variety of broad sweeps preventing religious people (including Christians) from entering certain public spaces and and even designating religious involvement as a sign of a mental disorder. You won’t be surprised to hear that the Beyond Sunday team disagrees with their assessment. But stick around and let us know what you think. (If this is crazy we don’t want to be sane!)

Patrick and Pastor David are without supervision in the studio this week, so buckle up and come along for the ride. We’re talking about a church that asked all of its older members to leave and contemplating the dangers of “fake news.” You can hear all of our Superbowl half time show predictions (and then send us a comment to let us know if we were right!) and of course, easily the most disturbing story of a tapeworm that you will hear this week. We hope you’ll enjoy this conversation as we continue to take our faith Beyond Sunday mornings and into the world.
